Women Who Lead in STEM and Skilled Trades

March is a time to celebrate leadership, innovation, and the women who are shaping the future. During Women’s History Month and Engineering Week, we recognize the important role women play in STEM fields and skilled trades—and the impact they have on industries, communities, and the next generation.

From engineers and cybersecurity experts to welders, electricians, and healthcare professionals, women are leading in careers that power our world.

Why Representation Matters

When students see women succeeding in STEM and skilled trades, it changes what they believe is possible. Representation helps young people imagine themselves in roles they may not have considered before.

For many years, fields like engineering, manufacturing, and construction were male-dominated. Today, more women are entering these careers, bringing new ideas, creativity, and innovation to the workforce.

When students see leaders who reflect their own identities and experiences, they gain confidence to explore bold career pathways.

Innovation Thrives with Diverse Perspectives

Innovation grows when different voices and perspectives come together. Research shows that diverse teams often solve problems more effectively because they approach challenges in new ways.

Women in STEM and skilled trades contribute to:

  • Designing safer infrastructure

  • Developing life-saving medical technology

  • Improving cybersecurity systems

  • Advancing manufacturing processes

  • Leading environmental and engineering solutions

Their work drives progress and strengthens industries across the country.

CTE’s Role in Expanding Opportunities

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs play a key role in expanding access to STEM and skilled trades careers. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and industry partnerships, CTE helps students explore careers early and build confidence in their abilities.

CTE programs:

  • Introduce students to high-demand career pathways

  • Provide real-world, project-based learning

  • Connect students with female mentors and industry leaders

  • Support certifications and career readiness skills

By creating inclusive learning environments, schools help ensure all students feel welcomed and encouraged to pursue careers in STEM and technical fields.

Encouraging the Next Generation

Families, educators, and community partners can help support future women leaders in STEM and skilled trades by:

  • Highlighting female role models

  • Encouraging exploration of technical and engineering programs

  • Supporting participation in competitions and leadership opportunities

  • Celebrating student achievements

When we intentionally encourage participation and celebrate success, we help build a stronger, more innovative workforce.

Looking Ahead

This Women’s History Month and Engineering Week, we celebrate the women who are breaking barriers, leading innovation, and shaping the future of STEM and skilled trades.

Their leadership reminds us that talent has no limits—and when we expand opportunities, we strengthen industries, communities, and the next generation of leaders.
